Your Impact
Reporting to the Engineer Manager – Data Engineer, your new role as Data Engineer will see you participate in analysis, design, development, delivery and support of data assets, pipelines and data engineering platforms to meet a wide range of business needs.

You will proactively take on key data engineering initiatives, working within constraints whilst applying the appropriate level of pragmatism to get the job done.

Bringing with you a breadth of experience, you will provide thought leadership on data engineering best practices, promoting high standards and continuously challenging our processes and thinking to ensure nib are maintaining a healthy return on investments in Machine Learning and Software development.

More specifically you will:
  • Liaise and ensure application alignment with technical and solution architects plus the wider architecture group
  • Secure, build and manage modern data architectures to enable analytics/data science
  • Rectify production issues in a timely manner in accordance with system SLAs.
  • Assist in the coordination and management of the production processes around applications and their associated infrastructure
  • Coordinate and automate the release process between non-production environments.
  • Present to peers and stakeholders with cutting edge thinking on the role of Machine Learning and software development within the organisation

Your Team
nib’s Emerging Technology and Data Platforms team enhance our service delivery of Data Warehouse & Analytics Engineering, Data Engineering and Machine Learning Engineering outputs, through the creation of technical centres of excellence. We are a highly collaborative team, who love to explore and have a lot of fun along the way by challenging the status quo and experimenting.

Your Background
You consider yourself someone with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a breadth of knowledge about scalable data pipelines, data models and analysis. However, at heart you are a Software Engineer, wanting to create and enable products with a real-world impact, using the best practices and tools available.

With previous commercial experience developing solutions in modern languages such as Node.JS, Ruby, Python and/or Golang coupled with tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or Machine Learning, Data Science or AI related subjects is desired to ensure you are well placed for success in this role.

Bring experience or knowledge for some of the following:
  • An architectural mindset with demonstrated knowledge of software engineering principles
  • Knowledge of storage options and their trade-offs (object storage, data warehouse, NoSQL etc)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across cross functional teams, communicating to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience with data engineering in cloud-based platforms with an understanding around how data is acquired and moved through pipelines
  • A track record of taking ownership, prioritising, and meeting deadlines
